A New Season of Gratitude: Loving My Body Through the Work

Recently, I’ve come face-to-face with the reality that life can change drastically in a single moment. Everything we know — everything that feels certain — can shift without warning.

That realization made me pause and really think about how much I take for granted. Every deep breath I take is a gift. Every time I bend down to pick something up, I should feel grateful for my spine, my muscles, my lungs — all working together without my even noticing.

It’s easy to focus on what feels wrong: the areas of my body I wish looked different, the aches and pains, the fatigue, the tasks I can’t seem to get to. But instead, I want to focus on gratitude. Gratitude for what is working. For what my body can still do. For the ways I’m still able to show up for my life.

From Burnout to Breakthrough

When we first moved into our current house, we went full throttle — fixing, painting, and making it into the home we dreamed of. We poured so much energy into it that, eventually, we burned ourselves out. Over the past few years, we stopped working on projects altogether.

But this past weekend, something clicked. Something happened that reminded me how quickly circumstances can change — and how important it is to take action while you still can.

With that fresh perspective, I picked up a paintbrush and finally tackled the patio. It felt so good to bring new life to that space — and to my own mindset — with just a few hours of focused effort. I also purged and organized some storage bins and got them labeled properly for the first time in way too long.

I realized: the work doesn’t have to feel like punishment. It can feel like a celebration of what my body can still do — and what I’m capable of creating.

Moving Forward with Gratitude (and the Right Tools)

This time, it’s not about pushing myself to exhaustion or beating myself up for what hasn’t been done. It’s about approaching the work with gratitude — gratitude for the body I have right now, for its ability to climb a ladder, paint a wall, lift a bin, and create beauty in my home.

Here are a few tools (and a playlist!) that helped me embrace this season of work with a little more joy — and a lot less stress:

Favorite Finds That Make the Work Easier (and More Fun)

🧽 My favorite cleaning wipes — Sometimes you just need a quick, satisfying win. These wipes are perfect for wiping down surfaces fast and make me feel like I’ve accomplished something even on my busiest days.

🎨 A 2-inch short-handled paint brush — When I painted the patio, this brush was a lifesaver for control and precision — especially in tight spaces and corners.

🏷️ A label maker for organizing bins & closets — Purging and labeling my storage bins felt so satisfying. A good label maker makes everything look neat and intentional.

🕯️ A beautiful, calming candle — Lighting a candle while working on the house shifts the mood from “chore” to “self-care ritual.” (I've linked this one before but its truly my fav!!)

📓 A gratitude journal — Writing down a few things I’m thankful for each day keeps my perspective grounded.

My Go-To Motivation Playlist

Whenever I feel myself dragging or tempted to procrastinate, I crank up some music that makes me want to move. Here are a few of my favorites — feel free to add them to your own list!

🎵 Cinderella Snapped — Jax

🎵 Use Somebody — Kings of Leon

🎵 You Make Me Feel… — Cobra Starship

🎵 Good as Hell — Lizzo

🎵 Don’t Stop Me Now — Queen

🎵 On Top of the World — Imagine Dragons

🎵 Dog Days Are Over — Florence + The Machine

🎵 Stronger — Kanye West

🎵 Walking on Sunshine — Katrina & The Waves

---

So here’s to moving forward — not just to finish a to-do list, but to honor what we’ve been given and make the most of it while we can.

What are you grateful for in this moment? What’s one thing you can do today — for your home or your body — to say “thank you” to the life you’re living?
