๐ŸŽ DIY Vanilla Extract: Start Now & Have the Perfect Gift Ready by Christmas

It’s crazy but its almost exactly six months until Christmas—which makes right now the perfect time to start prepping homemade gifts that are heartfelt, useful, and delicious. One of my favorites? Homemade vanilla extract.

For some reason this process always intimidated me but this week I stepped outside my discomfort... I made my very first batch ever, and while I won’t know just how amazing it turns out until I uncap it in December… I’m already excited to share the process (and the savings!) with you.... Plus share that I did it, and if i did it, you can too!

๐ŸŒฟ Why Make Your Own Vanilla Extract?

Store-bought pure vanilla extract can cost you a small fortune, and the cheap stuff is usually packed with artificial flavors and additives. Making it at home is:

Affordable and cost-effective

Natural with no weird ingredients

Easy (seriously—you just need beans, vodka, and time)

Beautiful as a homemade gift for teachers, neighbors, and foodie friends

---

๐Ÿ›’ What You’ll Need

Vanilla beans – [These are the exact beans I bought on Amazon (affiliate link)](YOUR AFFILIATE LINK). I paid $34 for 55 beans.

Vodka – I used 80 proof vodka. Three bottles cost me $36 total, and I still have half a bottle left.

Glass bottles – I used six empty wine bottles (750ml each) to steep the extract. You can transfer it into smaller bottles later for gifting.

---

๐Ÿงช My Process

I used six beans per wine bottle (750ml). Each bean was:

Cut in half, and then:

Split lengthwise to expose the seeds inside (this helps the vodka pull out more flavor).

So that’s 12 split pieces per bottle, steeping in vodka for 6 months.

Some guides recommend more beans for a stronger extract, but I’m giving mine the full steeping time. I’ll also be shaking the bottles every week or two to keep the infusion going strong.

And yes—this amount should be ready in time for Christmas! You’ll get a rich, fragrant extract perfect for gifting, baking, or showing off your DIY skills.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Cost Breakdown

Vanilla beans used: 36 out of 55 = ~65% of $34 = $22.10

Vodka used: 2.5 bottles = $30

Total cost = $52.10

Yield = Six wine bottles = 4.5 liters (about 152 oz)

๐Ÿ“ฆ That’s enough to fill:

38 bottles at 4 oz each, or

19 bottles at 8 oz each

➡️ Cost per 4 oz gift bottle = $1.37

➡️ Cost per 8 oz bottle = $2.74

Try finding pure vanilla at that price anywhere!

๐Ÿ‚ How to Make Vanilla Extract

1. Slice the vanilla beans in half width-wise, then lengthwise to expose the seeds.

2. Add 6 whole beans (12 pieces) to each 750ml bottle of vodka.

3. Seal and store in a dark, cool place.

4. Shake gently every week or so.

5. Let steep for 6 months minimum. That gets you right to the holidays!

Want to be extra fancy? Pour into gift-sized bottles in December and add a tag that says:

“All-natural vanilla extract—aged 6 months and still getting better. Refill with vodka and keep steeping for a never-ending bottle!”
