Getting Fit for the Journey: A Mom's Quest for Adventure and Connection

As a busy mom, life has always been about balancing family, work, and the never-ending to-do list. But somewhere along the way, I found myself feeling less like the energetic, adventurous woman I once was and more like someone just trying to keep up. Turning 40 this year was a wake-up call—not because I’m afraid of aging, but because I want to embrace the years ahead with strength, health, and vitality.

The Dream: Exploring and Family Adventures

Our family dreams of traveling together, exploring the great outdoors out of our vehicle, and making memories in breathtaking places. I picture us hiking scenic trails, kayaking in crystal-clear waters, and watching sunsets on the beach. But there’s a hitch: to fully embrace these adventures, I need to be physically ready.

I want to keep up with my kids as they sprint up trails or dive into new activities. I want to feel confident and capable as I navigate the demands of life on the road. Most importantly, I want to model a lifestyle of health and resilience for my children.

The Challenge: Starting Where I Am

The truth is, I’m not where I want to be physically. Over the past year and a half, I’ve gained some weight—about 20 pounds—and lost the level of fitness I once had. It’s easy to feel daunted by the journey ahead. But instead of focusing on what I’ve lost, I’m choosing to focus on what I can gain: strength, stamina, and the freedom to pursue this dream without hesitation.

My Plan: Small Steps Toward Big Goals

I know this transformation won’t happen overnight, but I’m ready to take it one step at a time. Here’s how I’m planning to get fit and prepare for the adventures ahead:

1. Variety in Workouts:

I used to love classes like kettlebell, Pilates, and yoga, and I want to bring that variety back. Now that I’m working out at home and Planet Fitness, I’m exploring ways to make exercise exciting and consistent.

2. Morning Routine:

Mornings set the tone for my day, and I’ve realized that getting my workout done first thing is key to sticking with it.

3. Eating for Energy:

Balancing my sweet tooth with healthier choices is a challenge, but I’m committed to eating more protein and fueling my body for the journey.

4. Family Involvement:

My ultimate goal is to involve my family in this process—whether it’s planning hikes together or experimenting with new healthy recipes we all enjoy.

Why It Matters

This journey isn’t just about looking a certain way; it’s about feeling alive and capable. It’s about being the kind of mom who says “yes” to adventure and keeps pace with her kids. It’s about making memories, not excuses.

The Road Ahead

As I embark on this journey, I’m reminding myself that progress, not perfection, is what matters. Every small change I make—every workout, every healthy meal, every choice to prioritize my well-being—is a step closer to living the adventurous life I envision for my family.

And one day, when we’re hiking that perfect trail or camping under the stars, I’ll know it was all worth it. This is more than a fitness journey—it’s the foundation for the life I want to live, for myself and the people I love most.

If you’ve ever felt the same pull toward change, let’s take this journey together. Because we’re not just getting fit—we’re getting ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
